This past weekend, 9 of our students in grades K-6 participated in the 2018 National Elementary Chess Championship in Nashville, TN. Over 2200 students from all over the country participated in this event. Here are the key achievements of this small but mighty team:
- K-1 championship: Jack Faissal (1st grade)– 11th place
- K-1 U500: Marco Mendez, t-20th place
- K-3 championship: Spencer Chin (3rd grade) – 12th place. This team also included Romir Mukherjee (3rd grade) and Dylan Kang (2nd grade), and together they brought in the 10th place team trophy despite being short on 1 team member! They also participated in the K-3 blitz tournament the day before the main event, and brought in 5th place as a team. Spencer Chin placed 9th in the blitz competition.
- K-6 U1400: Maggie Stacey (6th grade) – 10th place
Each of these sections had upwards of 150 players, so truly a great accomplishment. Other students who represented NEST+m at this event are Maya Nozaki (4th grade), Matthew Chin (5th grade), Jai Shah (5th grade). Congratulations to all players and their families for their dedication over the weekend, and to the chess moms for spending Mother’s Day encouraging and supporting the players.
