Dear chess families,
On behalf of the chess committee, I'd like to thank everyone who came out to support the year end chess party. We had a great turnout (nearly 100 adults and children). Our guest speaker Irina Krush really enjoyed hanging out with the children, and they all had excellent questions for her. For many of the kids playing in the simul, it was their first experience and they were determined to give the experts a good fight.
If you missed the party and/ or some of the announcements, here are the key highlights for the 2017-2018 year:
- Our tournaments will be run by Growing Minds (GM) Chess Academy starting next year. GM chess was founded in 2013. They oversee the chess program at Avenues: The World School including their After School Chess program, competitive team and run 5 tournaments each school year. They have a unique approach to chess instruction in that the instructors all played competitively as young children and vividly remember the feelings and experiences associated. They all have been very successful as players and coaches of young and older students alike and understand how to promote enjoyment of chess along with successful play. For those who have attended Avenues tournaments in the past will agree that they run very efficient and tech savvy tournaments. We look forward to welcoming GM chess to the NEST+m chess community next year, and hope that you will all come out to participate in and support our tournaments. For next year, the tournament dates are Nov 19, Jan 28, Mar 4, June 3
- Ana will continue with morning chess on Mondays and Tuesdays
- Lily, who has coached at some of our tournaments previously, will join the After 3 team, and will run an intermediate chess class on Wednesdays. Please be on the lookout for more details in the after 3 brochure. Giorgi and Jovan will continue with after 3 as well.
Wish you all a very happy summer, and hope to run into some of you at one of the summer chess tournaments in the city. Manhattan Open is one of the larger open tournaments in NYC, and will take place Aug 18-20.
Warm wishes,
