2017 NYS Scholastic Championships - Results and Pics!
Dear Chess Families,
Over this past weekend, 24 students from NEST+m participated in the New York State Scholastic Chess Championships. The frigid temperatures and the start of daylight savings time could not dampen the spirits of our eager students. They showed great team spirit over the weekend, and some very strong individual performances.
In the littlest section, K-1 reserve, Eloise Roberts and Gabriela Dotov played their first major away tournament! In K-1 championship, Ryan Ma won 4 out of 6 games and took home the 9th place individual trophy. He and his teammates (Kai Tsuboyama and Dylan Kang) won the 4th place team trophy.
In Primary Championship, the team of Romir Mukherjee, Dylan Ma, Spencer Chin, and Kyler Chiu faced extremely tough competition and yet were first place co-champions along with Dalton school who brought many more participants to the tournament. Individually, Romir Mukherjee placed 3rd, and Dylan Ma placed 4th, with 5 out of 6 wins each. Way to go primary champions!!
Elementary reserve was represented by Victor Dotov, Dale Cotler, Rhys Black, and Preston Ng. A very strong collective effort from them all, bringing in the 7th place team trophy. No easy feat given that this section had over 30 teams! Dale Cotler won 1st place under 500 in this section.
Matthew Chin represented our school in Elementary Intermediate. Jai Shah and Caden Jung played Elementary Championship. Caden won 4 out of 6 games in this very tough section. Colin Senat placed 6th in the Middle School Reserve section. Ryan Chen and Arnav Shah represented us in the Junior High Championships.
We had 5 high school students participate as well, and they brought home the 3rd place high school championship trophy. We wish our high school team all the best as most of them get ready for college this fall.
Finally, a big shout out to Gabe Tsuboyama’s dad – Gabe Sr. for participating in the friends and family tournament.
